History and Philosophy
In 1981, the University of California, Irvine opened the University Bookstore in the University
Center to serve the needs of the students, faculty, staff and community providing required &
recommended books, supplies and services which enhance the educational process. In 1988, the
University Bookstore temporarily moved to a location in the University Tower during the Phase III
expansion of the University Center (now called UCI Student Center) which re-opened in January 1990.
Phase IV renovation of the Student Center completed in 2007.
The store underwent a rebranding effort and emerged as The Hill in fall 2012 to focus on students' retail needs in addition to campus course materials.
We are a not-for-profit,
self-supporting organization owned by UC Irvine operating on behalf of the campus community. We currently
employ over 100 UCI students and many of our full-time staff are UCI Alumni. Any surplus is used for
programs in the division of Student Affairs.
The store is your one-stop shop for course materials, general books, UCI apparel, gifts, school supplies and more.
Mission Statement
We aspire to make a difference on our campus, foster its intellectual growth, enhance the quality of life and broaden the experiences of our customers, our staff and our community.
